historian

It’s important for us to tell the story of Tranøy lighthouse, life at the lighthouse and the associated activities, including pilotage. This is an important part of our coastal and cultural history that we must preserve and pass on.

It then became necessary to establish a lighthouse to guide ship traffic along the Vestfjord – into the inner basin, and direct ship traffic towards Tjeldsund, Ofoten and Tysfjord. The lighthouse director believed that Stangholmen was an appropriate location for a lighthouse.

A lighthouse apparatus with fixed light was chosen. The appropriation for the construction of the lighthouse was given in the budget for the period 1863-66, with an estimate of 6274 Specidaler.

The owner of Stangholman was willing to sell, but since he could not obtain a title deed, it was decided that the lighthouse service would pay an annual rent of 3 Specidaler. In addition, the lighthouse keepers were given the right to fetch water from Tranøy. A timber lighthouse building was erected, as well as outbuildings with a barn, woodshed and oil shed. A boathouse with a boat lift was built. A 4th order fire apparatus with fixed light was set up. The lighthouse was lit on September 19, 1864.

During a storm in the winter of 1867, a protective wall at the lighthouse was partially torn away by heavy seas. In 1877, there was also a severe storm, where the sea went over the entire Stangholmen island and caused major damage to both the protective wall, where the houses and the cistern were filled with seawater.

In 1903-04, it was proposed to equip Tranøy lighthouse with an indicator. Funding for this was not received until 1909-10. In 1910, a new lantern and a beacon were installed that gave two flashes every six seconds. In 1906, the lighthouse got a water tank in the basement, and a landing quay with a crane in 1908.

In 1933, in consultation with sailing organizations, a list was drawn up of lighthouses where fog signals were to be established. Tranøy was among these lighthouses. A grant of 120. 000 to purchase a diaphone. The 20 meter high iron tower on Moholmen outside Kabelvåg was dismantled and moved to Tranøy where it was erected (total height 28 m). The fire apparatus from 1910 was retained, as well as the installation of the moholmen. At the bottom – on the first floor, an engine room was furnished, on the second and third floors, 3 compressed air tanks were installed, while on the fourth floor the diaphone was installed. The new lighthouse was put into operation. November 01, 1936. This led to an increase in staffing to four men from the previous one. Because of this, three new buildings were built in addition to the tower. A semi-detached house, an outbuilding and a boathouse. There was now a lighthouse keeper, a first officer, a second officer and a relief officer who only worked when the lights were on between 7 August and 30 April. In 1959, the lighthouse was electrified, with a diesel generator as a reserve.

A new second-order lantern with a fixed lens (center section) and a 1000 W lamp were installed. An electrically driven compressor was installed for the fog signal. To get across the strait from Stangholmen to the mainland, a rowing boat had to be used. But that could be cumbersome. In 1969, a 250-meter-long footbridge was built across the narrow strait. A few years later, Tranøy Lighthouse Station was converted into a drying station. In 1983, the fog signal at Tranøy was discontinued and staffing was reduced from four to two. 1986 saw the lighthouse automated and five years later, on June 5, 1991, the last lighthouse keeper went off duty. On July 1, 1993, the adventure of Tranøy Lighthouse as a tourist facility began with the first operators, Stig Lexberg and his family.

Since I took over operations in 2017, the journey has been both exciting and rewarding. It’s been a steep learning curve, but with good help, an unstoppable will to learn, passionate curiosity and hard work, the most amazing things can happen. It’s about daring to JUMP – without having all the answers in advance. It’s not dangerous to follow your dream, as long as you really WANT to and the WILL comes from the heart.

In 2022, I expanded the adventure with the purchase of a building on Tranøy, formerly known as Dorothea Fryd – now FYRVERKET. It’s a café, a meeting and gathering place for both locals and visitors, with opportunities for events such as weddings, parties and corporate meetings.

The most important thing for me in my daily work is PEOPLE; having the right people in the team means everything. With a good team working well together, we can give the best to our guests. Every day I do my best to create an open, inclusive and warm place for both my employees and our guests.

Welcome to us at Tranøy Fyr!
