Tranøy Lighthouse, with its location and long history, is well worth a visit. Feel free to combine a guided tour up the lighthouse tower with good food, drinks, and lodging at Tranøy Lighthouse. In July, we offer guided tours every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All you need to do is buy a ticket at the reception desk or on our website, and meet us at the lighthouse stairs. The rest of the year, we offer guided tours as needed and when we have capacity.
Tranøy Lighthouse is perhaps the most beautiful lighthouse on the coast. Its location alone, with a view of the stunning Lofoten cliffs, is worth a visit. It was established in 1864 on an islet known as Stangholmen. The current lighthouse was originally built in 1914 on Moholmen off Kabelvåg and later moved to Tranøy. At 27.3 meters tall, it towers prominently over the landscape.
Today, the lighthouse is an important cultural heritage site that is open to the public. The lighthouses along the coast are vital infrastructure for shipping, and given the geopolitical situation, the threat landscape, and the focus on preparedness in the north, among other factors, the Norwegian Coastal Administration has tightened its regulations regarding activities related to the lighthouses.
This is closely linked to risk assessments and vulnerability analyses. Some lighthouses have been made less vulnerable through the installation of LED lights and more robust zoning, but the Tranøy Lighthouse is a protected historic site, and there are limits to what the Norwegian Coastal Administration can do regarding the old lamps and glass. For that reason, we can’t take visitors all the way to the top of the lighthouse, but we look forward to continuing to welcome visitors into the lighthouse tower and telling them about life at the lighthouse and its role throughout history.
